Akon will be giving back to his homeland of Africa in a big way.
The hip hop star is launching his “Akon Lighting Africa” academy, with an effort to provide solar power to over 600 million Africans.
In addition to electricity the “Akon Lighting Africa” academy will also provide jobs, as people will receive training on how to install and maintain solar powered systems.
Samba Bathily, co-founder of the project said, ” “We have the sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities. We now need to consolidate African expertise and that is our objective.”
Bathily continued, “We are investing in human capital. We can achieve great milestones and accelerate the African transformation process on condition that we start training a new generation of highly qualified African engineers, technicians and entrepreneurs now.”
Rapper Chinx is dead at age 31. The “Off the Rip” rapper was shot and killed this morning at 5 a.m. in the Jamaica Queens section of New York City.
Vlad TV reported and confirmed the news with French Montana’s sources. Lionel Pickens (better known to the hip hop community as Chinx Drugz) just finished partying at a hookah lounge with Cokeboy Yemen.
The Daily News reported that the car was shot at as Chinx drove his porsche down the street and rolled until it eventually stopped in the front of a Dunkin Donuts.
Chinx was the victim of a a drive-by shooting and was shot 8 times.
Legion Media Group made a statement:
“It is with a heavy heart that The Legion Media Group and 4 Kings Management announce the passing of Lionel “Chinx” Pickens this morning. He was 31. Few details are available about his passing but his management confirmed his passing this morning. The rapper from Queens, New York was a member of French Montana’s Coke Boys. Chinx’s dedication, humor and vision will always be remembered Chinx was one of the most talented, professional, and determined rappers this industry had to offer, further more, he was a friend.”
Chinx is known for his collaborations with French Montana, but he was more than an industry companion to Montana. The Far Rockaway native and “Dont Chu” rapper were close friends. No statement has been made by French Montana at this time.
